Week 1 Recap
BU women kicked off their season with a bang vs. Merrimack and play #2 Minnesota tight despite being swept, while on the men's side the co-captains and newcomers shine in a 5-2 win over Holy Cross
Women’s
Merrimack

The Terriers opened the season with an impressive 7-1 win over Merrimack at Agganis Arena. Six different Terriers scored a goal, including three newcomers: Lindsay Bochna (1-0—1), Lola Reid (1-2—3), and Kaileigh Quigg (1-0—1). 13 Terriers recorded a point, the 11th time that 13 or more have done so. The 7 goal effort was the most scored under Head Coach Tara Watchorn. The last time BU scored 7 was in the 2023 Beanpot consolation game vs. Harvard at Conte Forum (7-4 W).
On the power play, BU went 3 for 6 while allowing 1 goal on 3 power play opportunities for the Warriors. Both of Captain Tamara Giaquinto’s two goals were on the power play. It was her second career multi-goal game, the first also against Merrimack on February 17th, 2024. Giaquinto also recorded her first 3 point game as a Terrier.
Other Notes:
Lola Reid is the first freshman to record a 3+ point game in a season opener since Jenelle Kohanchuk in 2008-09
Kiera Healey and Maeve Carey are the first defenders to record at least a point in their debut since Andi Calderone on December 4th, 2020
Minnesota
Game 1
In game 1 vs. the Gophers, the Terriers took the #2 team in the country to the wire, holding Minnesota scoreless till the 18:40 minute mark of the 3rd. Goalie Callie Shanahan put up a 40 save effort on 41 shots on goal for a .976 save percentage, the best performance for a Terrier goalie vs. the Gophers in program history. The Scarlet and White allowed the high-powered Minnesota offense just 1 goal. The first time that BU allowed fewer than 4 goals in a match-up with the Gophers. Out shot 41-11, the Terriers locked down defensively, blocking 23 shots compared to Minnesota’s 8. Captain Tamara Giaquinto recorded a team high 5 blocks.
Game 2
In their second game at Ridder Arena, BU fell 5-2 to the Gophers. The Terriers allowed their first even strength goal of the season at the 15:55 mark of the first period. This ended a streak of 135:55 without allowing an EV to start the season, the longest streak to start a season in program history. Newcomer Riley Walsh (1-0—1) scored her first goal as a Terrier, and Lilli Welcke (1-0—1) scored her first of the season. Lola Reid (0-1—1) continued her stellar start to her BU career, picking up another point with an assist on Welcke’s goal. BU was able to kill all four penalties.
Men’s
Holy Cross

The Terriers opened up the 2024-25 campaign with a strong 5-2 win over the Holy Cross Crusaders. Coach Jay Pandolfo improves to 3-0 in season openers. The top line of co-captains Shane Lachance (0-3—3) and Ryan Greene (2-1—3), and Quinn Hutson (0-3—3) combined for 9 pts on the night. Freshmen Cole Eiserman, Cole Hutson, and Alex Zetterberg rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
The two teams combined for 25 penalties for 83 penalty minutes on the night. With each team scoring 1 PPG on 4 (BU) and 5 (HC) PPO. BU’s 46 PIM was their most since January 27th, 2008 when they also recorded 46 in a 4-3 victory over Arizona State in Tempe—the Sun Devils recorded 71 PIM in the game.

For the 2nd consecutive season, BU's first goal of the season is scored by the captain
Ryan Greene has played in 2 season openers at home and recorded a multi-goal game in both (2022-23 vs. Bentley)
Shane Lachance (0-3--3) and Ryan Greene (1-2--3)'s dual 3 pt performances in their debuts as captains, is the most points recorded by a captain in their debut since Patrick Curry in 2019-20 when he also recorded 3 point (1-2--3)
Advanced Stats
BU dominated the scoring chances against the Crusaders, doubling their chances on where shots and shots on goal were more even. The Terriers were able to maintain OZone Possession for nearly four more minutes than Holy Cross.
Ryan Greene’s performance far surpassed his personal best last season when he recorded a 4.3876 Game Score vs. Vermont on March 9th in the regular season finale.
