Home Cooking and Bell Ringing (First Half Recap)
Let's take a look back at the stats and notes of the first half for both Terrier squads
With both teams off for a couple of weeks, let’s look back at an eventful first half for both teams.
Women’s
At the end of the first semester, the women’s squad is 11-5-1 overall, 9-2-1 in Hockey East. The Terriers are at the top of the Hockey East standings with 30 points. Last season they earned 36 points over the whole season, the season before, in 2022-23, they earned 33 points.
With Walter Brown Arena out of commission due to renovations, the Terriers took up residence at Agganis. It was quite the home away from home for the squad, winning their first 5 at the arena, including two shutouts—October 12th vs. Northeastern (4-0) and October 19th vs. Maine—ultimately finishing 5-2-1 at home.
On the road, after starting off the season 0-3, including two shutouts—October 4th vs. Minnesota (0-1) and October 11th vs. Northeastern (0-4)—the Terriers won the next six road games to finish 6-3-0 away from home.
The biggest win of the season was the opener, a 7-1 win vs. Merrimack at home on October 1st. Their biggest loss was the last game at Agganis a 1-8 loss to Princeton.
The Terriers ended a 12 game losing streak to the Northeastern Huskies on October 12th. They went on an 8 game winning streak from October 12th through November 7th, their longest since October 26th, 2013 through November 15th, 2013.
Freshman Lola Reid, the team point leader (7-6—13), came out of the gate hot, with 13 points in her first 10 games as a Terrier, including a 6 game points streak from October 12th through November 1st. Unfortunately, she cooled off in the back half of the semester, being held pointless since her point streak was snapped. Despite the scoring woes, Reid remains in the top 10 among Hockey East skaters for points.
In goalie, Callie Shanahan remains stellar, with a .920 SV% and 1.83 GAA, she is 9th in SV% and 5th in GAA among in Hockey East goalies. She is 2nd in wins with 9 and tied for 3rd in shutouts with 2.
Transfer students have been a key to the Terriers’ success this season, with Providence transfer Lindsay Bochna and Union transfer Riley Walsh each with 9 pts. After a slow start to the season, Bochna has recorded a point in 6 of her last 7 and 8 of her last 9 games.
Four players recorded multi-goal games—Tamara Giaquinto (10/1/24 vs. Merrimack), Lola Reid (10/25/24 vs. Syracuse), Luisa Welcke (11/2/24 vs. Providence), Sydney Healey and Clara Yuhn (11/7/24 vs. Merrimack).
10 players recorded multipoint games, led by Lola Reid and Christina Vote with 4 each. All 16 skaters with 15 or more games played have recorded at least a point.
The Terriers have 17 games left to go in the 2024-25 season, including the Beanpot, another each vs. each of Northeastern and Boston College in Hockey East play. They also have a series vs. defending Hockey East Champions UConn to end the season.
Men’s
The Terriers end an up-and-down first half with a 9-6-1 record, 5-3-1 in Hockey East, good enough for a four-way tie for second with 17 points.
BU opened the campaign, winning their first 3 games of the season for the first time since 2014-15. The Scarlet and White then lost 5 of 7 including their longest losing streak at Agganis (3) since a four game skid between February 22nd, 2020 and October 15th, 2021 (home games in the 2020-21 season took place at Walter Brown Arena)1. A gutsy shootout win at the Alfond, after a loss the night before, set off a four game unbeaten streak that included the Terriers winning their first trophy of the season at the 2024 Friendship Four. It was the first non-Beanpot mid-season tournament trophy since the 2010 Ice Breaker Invitational also over Notre Dame. The semester ended with a split with UMass Amherst, including a 4-2 win at the Mullins Center on the back of 4 unanswered goals.
The Terriers finished with a 4-4 home record, their most home losses in a first half since 2021-22.
On the player side of things, Shane Lachance ended the first half with 17 points, a 4 point increase to last season’s total. Cole Eiserman leads all Terriers with 9 goals, the most among Hockey East freshmen and tied for 2nd most among all freshmen—1 off the national leader. Eiserman is also the only Terrier with more than 1 multi-goal game this season. 8 different Terriers accomplished the feat, including three in the same game. It was just the third time that it’s been done by the Terriers since at least 2002-03. The first being David Van der Gulik (hat trick), Bryan Ewing, Dan Spang on March 17th, 2006 vs. New Hampshire and the last being January 30th, 2015 when Jack Eichel, Ahti Oksanen (hat trick), and Brandon Hickey when did so vs. UMass-Amherst.
Cole Hutson is the only Terrier this season to record 4+ points in a game. 15 different Terriers recorded multipoint games, led by Quinn Hutson with 5, and Cole Eiserman and Shane Lachance with 4 each.
20 different Terriers have recorded a point this season, including every player with at least 14 games played, 16 have recorded a goal. Goalie Mathieu Caron has two points on the season so far, both assists. He is just the fourth goalie since at least 2002-03 with multiple points in the season—John Curry (2005-06), Matt O’Connor (2014-15), and Connor LaCouvee (2015-16).
Shane Lachance leads all Terriers with an xG of 7. Cole Hutson leads all Terriers by over 4 mins with a Puck Control Time of 11:53.
Trackers
Back in October, we debuted our Stat Trackers, let’s take a look at where they stand at the end of the first half.
Freshman Goals Record (Men’s)
After a bit of a lull compared to Macklin Celebrini last season, Cole Eiserman is currently up to 9 goals on the season, 2 off of where Celebrini was at after the same 16 games. Eiserman will have to up his pace in the second half to keep up with Celebrini’s performance, who scored 22 goals in the second half and playoffs.
Freshman Defenseman Records (Men’s)
After starting the season with a goal, Cole Hutson has slowed his goal production, although he closed the gap a bit, with 2 goals in the last game of the first half. Cole will need 12 goals in the second half to surpass his older brother.
On the points side of this, a four point game in Amherst pulls the younger Hutson within four points of his brother at the same point, but it will take a big effort. Lane went on an 11 game point streak from December 11th through February 6th of his freshman year.
Freshman Points Record (Women’s)
Lola Reid started off extremely strong but has not recorded a point since November 1st. It will be a tall order to match or beat the BU Athletics Hall of Famer’s record.
Race to 100
Ryan Greene is at 80 career points, while Quinn Hutson is at 79 points. Greene recorded 13 pts in his first 16 games of the season (.813 Pts/GP), while Hutson recorded 15 in 14 (1.07 Pts/GP). The Terriers have at least 18 games left in the season and the pair would each need to improve their points per game to reach the 100 point milestone. Greene needs 1.11 Pts/GP, while Hutson needs 1.167 Pts/GP.
The longest home losing streak since the 2019-20 season is 4 games, no matter how you slice it. The streak that started on 2/22/20 at Agganis completed at Walter Brown on 1/8/21 lasted 4 games and the streak that ended on 10/15/21 at Agganis started on 2/26/21 at Walter Brown also lasted 4 games.
