Happy Homecoming (Week 16 Recap)
The Terrier women complete a shutout sweep of Holy Cross in their return home, while the men drop 2 to Boston College
The women completed a season shutout sweep of the Crusaders, while the men fell to the Eagles.
Women’s
Holy Cross (2-0 W, 3-0 W)
A night of firsts on Friday night lifts the Terriers over the Crusaders. Alex Law opened the scoring with her first of the season at 4:26 in the first period. It was also her first goal in nearly a year, her last goal coming on January 27th, 2024, also against Holy Cross at the Hart Center.
In the second, freshman Lola Reid finally ended her 13 game pointless streak with her 8th goal of the season. The goal and the point moves her to second on the team in both categories.
Mari Peterson recorded her first career shutout, a 25 save effort. It’s the first time since 2020-21 that two Terrier goalies recorded a shutout in the same season—Kate Stuart and Corinne Schroeder. Incidentally, that was the last time BU shutout the same opponent in back to back games against them—February 5th and 7th, 2021 vs. Merrimack.
On Saturday, the Terriers finally returned home to Walter Brown Arena and continued their winning ways. Captain Tamara Giaquinto, who scored the first goal in the last game before Walter Brown’s closure, opened the scoring and the new arena with her league leading 6th power play goal of the season. Clara Yuhn extended the lead in the last minutes of the 1st. The goal ends an 11 game goal drought for Yuhn. Lindsay Bochna scored her sixth of the season to cap off the win. Christina Vote ended a 5 game point drought with an assist on the goal.
Mari Peterson was again stellar, becoming the first BU goalie since Andrea Brändli shutout RPI and UNH in back to back starts on October 7th and 14th, 2022. The 15 save effort was the 6th lowest saves needed for a shutout in program history.
BU has killed 29 straight penalties dating back to December 6th vs. Maine in Orono.
Other Notes
With Mari Peterson's back to back shutouts, Callie Shanahan and she become the first pair of goalies in program history to each record multiple shutouts in a season
BU records their second ever three game series shutout sweep of an opponent, and first since 2006-07 vs. Vermont
Men’s
Boston College (2-6 L, 0-2 L)
The Terriers and Eagles renewed their ancient rivalry for the 296th time. BC opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 5:17 into the first. On a major power play, Quinn Hutson tied things up, scoring his 12th of the season and first against BC at Agganis. Less than 30 seconds later, Cole Eiserman gave the Terriers the lead, with his 14th goal of the season and 13th at Agganis Arena. With the goal, he ties the record for the most goals at Agganis Arena in a season, set by Matt Nieto in 2012-13. BC scored 5 unanswered goals, including 3 in the second and 2 empty net goals in the 3rd.
BU killed their only penalty.
On Saturday night, the Green Line Rivalry took a ride outside the city limits to Conte Forum. Newly added freshman goaltender Mikhail Yegorov got his first career start, becoming the first goalie to do so since Vinny Duplessis on February 6th, 2021 (3-1 W) at Walter Brown Arena—BC was also #1 at that time.
After a protocol violation put BU on the PK early, BC scored on their second shot of the game, but that was the only shot that got past Yegorov. Yegorov saved BC’s next 23 shots on goal. The Eagles would add an empty net goal to seal things.
BU out shot BC for the second night in a row, but could not get anything past Fowler. They also held the slight edge in faceoffs 32 to 29.
Other Notes
On Friday, BU became the first team to score two power play goals in a game vs. BC this season, and just the 3rd in the past two seasons to do so, (Quinnipiac 3/31, Denver 10/21)
