Some may not know that you too can dive deep into BU hockey stats. On BUHockeyStats.com you can use all kinds of filters and sorts to find fun, interesting, and use BU hockey stats and notes. In this user’s guide, we will show off some of the unique and interesting things you can find on the site.
Stats Bot
We’ll start with the Stats Bot, the bot which started off as Twitter bot is one of the simplest interfaces on the whole site. It simply features a text box where you can ask it anything (well, not anything, but a lot of things).
Want to know BU’s record vs BC on Mondays? (33-21-1, to be exact) simply ask. Curious who wore #17 in 1994-95? (Jay Pandolfo), type it in the box. The women’s record since 2010-11 when scoring 3+ goals (easy, 241-28-24). There’s even a cheat sheet on the page that breaks down and explains all the different things you can query.
Records
The record page lists the all-time results for both the men’s and women’s teams and contains all kinds of filters and sorts to drill down into the data.
Results
The main table for this page, is “Results”, which lists every BU game result in its history, with its given date, opponent, score, arena, and the tournament (if applicable). The Results table gives you the ability to see the who, when, where, and how of whatever filter you want. For example, if we want to see how many times BU has shutout Vermont in February it’s easy to see that it was 6, including 4 times since 2018.
Record
The “Record” table groups and summarizes the results of the filters. You can group by Opponent, Conference, Coach, Arena, Season, Month, and DOW and then use the same filers as in the “Results” table to filter down to the lower level that you’re looking for. The example below shows the women’s team’s home record grouped by opponents and sorted by wins.
First/Last Game
The “First Game” and “Last Game” tables uses the same groupings as “Record” to show either the first or last game of the give grouping and filtering.
Streaks
The “Streaks” table features the longest winning, unbeaten, winless, and losing streaks for the given filter. The table below shows the Terrier’s streaks vs. UMass Amherst in the Hockey East Era (i.e., 1984-85 to now).
Players
The “Players” page has career, season, and game (only from 2002-03 onward) stats for both the men and women.
Career
The “Career” table is the default table that comes up when navigating to the page. It allows you to sort and filter career totals for players. For example, you can find all the players with over 50 career goals and less than 100 pts since 1980-81. There’s just two, David Van der Gulik and Brian Collins.
Season
The “Season” table breaks things down by season and allows you to filter by name (including portions of names e.g., first and last names), number, season, position, and yr, in addition to the fields available in “Career”. For example, you can filter by freshmen defensemen and see that Lane Hutson set the points record for the group in 2022-23.
Game
The “Game” table has the stat lines for every player for every game from 2002-03 on. It allows you to find notes like all the hat tricks that the women’s players have recorded against Providence.
Stat Formats
The “Game” table also has other sub-tables, found under “Stat Format” which includes: “Group by: Opponent”, which sums up the stats lines for each player for each team played; “Splits”, which allows you to see an individual player’s stats broken down by location, result, month, DOW, opponent, conference, arena, and tourney; and “Situational Records” which shows BU’s record when the given player accomplishes or doesn’t accomplish specific feats.
Streaks
The “Streaks” table1 allows you to see the longest goal, assists, and point streaks since 2002-03.
Notables
The “Notables” page shows some notable stats for the current (and some previous) seasons. They include: Jersey Records, Hat Tricks, Shutouts, Longest Point Streaks, and Active Point Streaks.
Other Pages
A couple other pages on the site: Trivia and Birthdays. The trivia page has a daily trivia challenge, with each day having a different theme in addition to a “Free Play” mode to make and test your own trivia prowess:
Monday- “Beanpot Monday”
Tuesday- “Terrific Terrier Tuesday” (Awards Related Questions)
Wednesday- “Women’s Hockey Wednesday”
Thursday- “Jersday Thursday”
Friday- “Foe Friday” (Questions About Opponents)
Saturday- “Staturday” (Player Stat Questions)
Sunday- “Sunday Scores” (Score related questions)
The Birthdays page features a calendar with the birthday of every men’s player whose birthday I could find. There’s also one more secret page, that isn’t linked anywhere else on the site.
Conclusion
I hope that people find this guide of some use to finding answers to their questions. If there’s anything that I can add or something needs a correction, feel free to reach out.
