Big (Mike) Response (Week 19 Recap)
Splits for both teams, as the women win and tie UNH and the men split with PC
A weekend of splits, as the women beat UNH on Friday before tying them on Saturday, while the men lost the road game before winning the home game vs. Providence.
Women’s
New Hampshire (2-1 W, 2-2 T (SOL))
Christina Vote opened the scoring on Friday night with just her second goal of the season at 17:43 in the first. It was her first since January 3rd at Holy Cross. Maggie Hanzel also scored her second of the season to extend the Terriers’ lead to 2. Her first since January 11th at Vermont. UNH ended Callie Shanahan’s shutout bid at 7:32 in the third. The Scarlet and White held on for the win, their 18th Hockey East conference win, which matches the program record set in 2012-13 and also matched in 2019-20.
The Terriers won the face-off battle, winning 21 of 36 faceoffs (58.33%), led by Sydney Healey, who was a perfect 5-5 at the dot. Callie Shanahan stopped 21 of the Wildcats’ 22 shots on goal.
On Saturday, Captain Tamara Giaquinto opened the scoring with her first even strength goal of the season and first even strength goal since December 2nd, 2023 against Providence. UNH tied it up two minutes later. At 18:18 in the period, Giaquinto scored her second of the game to give the Terriers the lead back. Scoring two even strength goals for the first time in her career. In the 2nd, the Wildcats tied things up again. After a scoreless third and overtime, the teams headed for shootout. The Terriers fell in the tenth round of the shootout.
The Terriers dominated shots on goal 42-29 but couldn’t get the winner past Sedona Blair. They also held the face off edge, winning 23 of 40 (57.5%).
Other Notes
The Terriers need just 1 point next weekend vs. UConn to claim the Hockey East Regular Season Title and #1 Seed in the Hockey East Tournament
Sydney Healey has recorded 2+ points in 4 of her last 6 games.
Men’s
Providence (3-6 L, 3-0 W)
The Beanpot hangover was alive and well on Friday night. Providence started the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. On the power play at 5:46 of the second, Ryan Greene brought the Terriers within 1 with his 12th of the season, matching his career high. The goal also ended a 6 game goal drought for Greene. The Friars scored 3 straight to extend their lead. Devin Kaplan got the Terriers within two with a pair of goals—one on the power play, one shorthanded. PC scored an empty netter to seal it.
Mikhail Yegorov recorded his worst game as a Terrier, allowing 4 goals on 21 shots on goal and got pulled after 36 mins for Matheiu Caron who allowed 1 goal on 11 shots faced.
On Saturday night, Yegorov and the Terriers responded in a big way. After a scoreless first, Jack Harvey broke the deadlock at 13:15 in the second with his 8th of the season and 4th in the last 6 games. Sascha Boumedienne scored his first collegiate goal, with Yegorov recording an assist on the goal. With the assist, BU has had multiple goalies record a point in the same season for the first time since at least 2002-03.
In the third, Quinn Hutson scored his 17th of the season, a goal which was the 50th goal and 100th point of his career. Hutson is the first Terrier to reach 50 career goals since Bobo Carpenter in 2018-19 and first to record 100 points as a Terrier since Patrick Harper in 2019-20.
Yegorov held strong all night, stopping all 30 of the Friars goals to earn his first career shutout as a Terrier. He is the first freshman Terrier goalie to shutout Providence since Grant Rollheiser on March 8th, 2009. He is the third since 2002-03 to record a point en route to a shutout (Matt O'Connor (3/14/15), Sam Tucker (11/22/19)) and first of those to do it in their first career shutout.
Other Notes
BU recorded their 20th shutout of Providence all-time, their most vs. any opponent
Both goalscorers of the Terriers first two goals assisted on the third goal
Advanced Stats
Game 1
This was the 2nd highest xG recorded in a loss by the Terriers, behind only the Yale game, in which they recorded a 4.2 xG. However, they did hold the xG edge in that game. The Friars dominated neutral zone faceoffs 70%-30%.

BU recorded 8 high danger shots (2.2 xG) compared to PC’s 7 (1.71 xG). 3 of the Friars high danger shots resulted in goals, while 2 of the Terriers’ did—both of Devin Kaplan’s goals.
Outside the first half of the 1st period, the Friars dominated the xG differentials, but the Terriers got things close in the final 5 minutes of the game.
Only four Terriers record an xG% over 60 and of those only 3 (Copponi, Lachance, and Willander) recorded significant ice team.
Game 2
Mikhail Yegorov played stellar for the Terriers, as the advanced stats shows. The Terriers were out played in all but scoring chances, of which they only held the edge by one. Yegorov record a GSAx of 2.3, the best by a Terrier goalie since Mathieu Caron record a GSAx of 2.4 in a shutout of UNH on January 13th, 2024.

BU held the xG advantage for much of the game, only letting up when they stop taking shot attempts in the last 5 minutes of the game as the Friars pulled their goalie and when 6 on 5.
Aiden Celebrini had a superb game, recording xG% of 83.09% in his 15 minutes of ice time.
