Bean Queens Again (Women's Beanpot Recap)
The Northeastern Huskies continue their 3-Year Reign as a Beanpot Champions with a win over BU, BC earns 3rd, Harvard 4th
In front of a packed TD Garden, the Women’s Beanpot took center stage, with Boston’s best facing off to see who would lift the Beanpot.
Fly Eagles Fly
In the Women’s Beanpot undercard, the Boston College Eagles were determined not to go two straight Beanpots without a win. Hockey East’s leading goalscorer, Julia Pellerin scored her 13th of the season, to give the Eagles the lead less than 5 minutes into the first. Molly Jordan and Katie Pyne would each add a goal to give BC a 3-0 going into the dressing room.
After a scoreless second, BC extended their lead with a shorthanded goal at 6:39 in the third. Harvard would finally get one back with 6 minutes to play with a Maria Pape power play goal.
Despite the goal differential, shots were even 28-28. After entering in relief, Emily Davidson saved 18 of 19 BC shots in the 2nd and 3rd period.
The win gave BC their tournament leading 16th third place finish, while Harvard finished last for the 9th time.
Three-peat
In front of 13,279 fans, the largest crowd for a women’s hockey game in New England ever, the Northeastern Huskies claimed their 20th Women’s Beanpot title.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the first when Lily Yovetich’s shot deflected of a BU stick, over goalie Callie Shanahan’s head and into the net. It was Yovetich’s first goal of the season and 2nd in her 153 games career.
In the second, Northeastern extended thier lead to 3 with goals from Lily Shannon and Jaden Bogden 40 seconds apart in the last 3 minutes of the period.
2024 Beanpot MVP Skylar Irving seal it with an empty net goal at 17:16 in the third. Lisa Jönsson recorded the first Beanpot Championship shutout since BC goalie Katie Burt shutout Northeastern in the 2016 final (7-0). For the Huskies, it was their first Beanpot championship shutout since 1989, in a 9-0 win over Harvard. It was the first time in history that BU failed to score in a Women’s Beanpot final.
