Bean Line Rivalry (Beanpot Championship Preview)
The ancient rivals, BU and BC will face off for the Beanpot title after both teams dominated the competition
The 2025 Beanpot Championship will see the Boston University Terriers and Boston College Eagles meet for the first time since 2016.
First Round Recap
Before we preview the 72nd Beanpot final, let’s take a look back at the first round, where both finalist put things away early.
Semifinal 1: BU 7 Harvard 1
Harvard opened the scoring in the 72nd Beanpot on the power play 5:44 in to the first period, with a goal from team leading scorer Casey Severo (9), but that was all they could muster in the game. Devin Kaplan tied things up with his 3rd career TD Garden goal and first in the Beanpot.
BU co-captain Shane Lachance scored his 4th power play—9th overall—goal of the season to give the Terriers the lead 3:25 into the 2nd period. Just over two and a half minutes later, Cole Hutson extended the Terriers lead. With the goal, all three Hutson brothers—Quinn, Lane, Cole—have now scored at TD Garden. Jack Harvey scored his 7th of the season, matching his career high. It was his first neutral site goal since the 2024 West Regional Final vs. Minnesota. Devin Kaplan scored again at 18:47 in the second, his second of the game and fourth career TD Garden goal, his most at any arena outside Agganis. In the waning seconds of the period, Quinn Hutson scored his 16th goal of the season. With the goal, Cole and Quinn Hutson are the first pair of Terrier brothers to score in the same game at TD Garden since at least 2002-03. The 6 goal second was BU’s highest goal output in a Beanpot period since scoring six in the third period of a 7-1 semifinal win over Harvard in 1997.
In the third, Cole Hutson capped things off with his second goal of the game and fourth point in the game. He is the first Terrier to record 4 points in a Beanpot game since Brian Collins (3-1--4) in the 2001 Beanpot semifinal vs. Northeastern.
The Terriers head to their 57th Beanpot Championship Game after scoring their most goals in a Beanpot game since the 1997 Beanpot semifinal against Harvard also 7-1.

Captain Eamon Powell scored his second of the season and first since November 2nd vs. St. Cloud State to restore the Eagles 2 goal lead.
Again in the second, the Eagles struck early, with Lukas Gustafsson scoring 35 seconds into the period, his second of the season. Also scoring his second of the season, Aram Minnetian with a goal at 17:31 in the period.
After 13 minutes without a goal in the 3rd, Andre Gasseau scored at the 13:36 mark, his second goal against Northeastern this season—first on November 22nd at Conte Forum. Dylan Hryckowian gave Northeastern their second goal of the game, but it was too little too late for the defending Beanpot champions. Ryan Leonard and James Hagens each scored to cap off the Eagle 8-2 win, for their first trip to Beanpot Championship since 2019.

Consolation Game (4:30 pm): Northeastern vs. Harvard
Northeastern and Harvard will face off in the Beanpot Consolation game for the first time since 2016, in which NU won 5-1.
The Huskies (11-11-3, HEA (10th): 4-9-3) enter on a 3 game losing streak but had the weekend off and will be fully rested and ready for their first Beanpot Consolation game since 2017. Their loss on Monday ended their streak of 6 straight Beanpot Finals—their longest streak of appearances in program history.
The Crimson (7-13-2, ECAC (7th): 6-8-2) also enter the game on a 3 game losing streak, including losing to Dartmouth over the weekend (2-3). Third period goals from Michael Callow and Mick Thompson were not enough to catch up with the Big Green.
Northeastern is playing in their 48th Beanpot Consolation game (18 third place finishes and 30 last place finishes). They last played in the early game in 2017 defeating BC in 4-2.
Harvard has played in 4 of the last 5 Beanpot Consolation games and 44th overall (20 thirds, 24 last place finishes). The Crimson have not won the game since 2019 (5-2 over BU) but finished 3rd in 2022 after tieing BC 3-3 for the first official tie in tournament history.
Championship Game (7:30 pm): BU vs. BC
The most played Championship Game matchup (22) in Beanpot history will get its 23rd edition Monday night, as the Boston University Terriers take on the Boston College Eagles. In the regular season BC swept BU (2-6, 0-2) and the Eagles have won 6 of the last 7 against the Terriers with their sole loss coming in the 2024 Beanpot semifinal.
Despite facing off 22 times previously, the teams have not met in a Beanpot final since 2016, a game in which the Eagles won a goalie battle 1-0 in overtime to claim their 20th Beanpot Title.
The Terriers (15-10-1, HEA (3rd): 10-6-1) enter off of an overtime loss (1-2) to Merrimack on Friday. Jack Harvey scored the only goal for the Terriers. Mikhail Yegorov stopped 24 of 26 shots on goal.
The Eagles (21-4-1, HEA (1st): 13-3-1) come into the final on a 9 game winning streak, including a 4-2 win over New Hampshire on Friday. Gabe Perreault tied things up short-handed in the second. Will Vote (8), Gentry Shamburger (1), and Mike Posma added 3 in the third to give BC the win.
BU holds the edge in Beanpot Final matchups, 12-10, however BC has won each of the last 3—all three en route to Frozen Four appearances for the Eagles. BU’s last win over the Eagles came in 2007. 3 of the last 4 and 4 of the last 6 B-Line Finals have gone to overtime.
