BU began their residency at Boston Arena, unfortunately, with a loss to arch-rivals Boston College on February 6th, 1918 (1-3), a game in which Warren Pond scored the first ever goal for the Terriers. The Arena would subsequently burn down eight months later on December 18th, 1918. The Terriers would lose their next three at the Arena before winning, beating the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass Amherst) 6-1 on January 11th, 1923. Adolphus Provost scored the game winner and Joseph Almer recorded the first Scarlet and White Hat Trick in team history in the game.

As the only arena in town, from the start the Terriers shared their first home with Harvard, Boston College, and the Boston Bruins—from 1924 to 1928, the opening of the Boston Garden. Northeastern, who still calls the Arena home today, took up residence there in 1930.

Despite the four schools sharing the Arena, all four didn’t occupy it at the same time till 1932-33. While BU and BC played their rivalry opener in 1917-18, Harvard’s program was suspended for World War I. The following season, BU suspended their program for World War I during the 1918-19 season. In that same year, Boston Arena was burned to the ground on December 18th, 1918. The Terriers played just a single game in the first iteration of the arena.

Following the Arena’s rebuilding in 1921 and the Terriers’ return to the sport, BU, BC, and Harvard became arena mates. BU held a 34-35-4 record in this era—only beating the Crimson once in 7 games, and holding a 7-4-1 record vs. the Eagles. This era also featured BU’s first shutout of BC—and just 2nd overall—on December 23rd, 1924 a 1-0 effort by Don Martin. It took BU till their 5th attempt to defeat Harvard for the first time, a 3-0 shutout also by Don Martin on December 18th, 1925. It would be another 11 games and 13 years before the Terriers beat the Crimson a second time on December 20th, 1938 (6-3).

From 1929-32, BC suspended their program due to the Great Depression as Northeastern began their program. The Terriers got their first win over Northeastern on February 6th, 1931—13 years to the day of BU’s first game vs BC, an Olympic Tryout organized by the New England AAU—a 4-3 win in which Paul Bergholtz scored 2 goals in a 3 point effort.

In the 1932-33 season, for the first time in the history of Boston Arena, BU, BC, Harvard, and Northeastern shared the arena. On February 9th, 1943, as Allied Forces earned their first major land offensive against Japan in the Battle of Guadalcanal, BU and Northeastern—despite sharing an arena for 13 years—played their 2nd ever game against each other. All four programs suspended operations for the 1943-44 and 1944-45 seasons due to World War II, with NU taking a third season off in 1945-46.

The post-war years saw many of the program records that still stand today get set. Jack Garrity set the program records for goals in a season (51) and points in a season (84), as well as matching the program record for goals (7) and points (9) in a game. All in 1949-50 en route to being named among BU’s first All-Americans alongside goalie Ike Bevins and fellow forward Walt Anderson. Garrity went on to be the first Terrier to be named a First Team All-American in multiple seasons, earning the honor in 1950-51 as well.

Tournaments at the Arena — Part I

The New England Intercollegiate Hockey League was an early attempt for eastern teams to form a conference and stabilize their schedule starting in 1936-37. The Terriers won the league title in 1937-38, 1938-39, 1946-47, 1947-48, and 1949-50. The league began to organize an end of season tournament at the Arena starting in 1947-48, the Terriers won the tournament in 1949-50, 1950-51, 1951-52—though the 1951-52 was an invitational tournament that included non-league teams.

1952 saw the start of the oldest mid-season tournament in the country begin at Boston Arena, what was then called the “New England Invitational Tournament” which would almost immediately become known as the Beanpot. The Terriers beat NU 4-1 in the first ever Beanpot game before falling 4-7 to Harvard in the final. Future 1960 Olympic Gold Medalist Dick Rodenhiser scored BU’s first ever Beanpot goal, and Paul Whalen had the game winner.

The first edition of the tournament was a bit different from how the tournament is known today. First off it was played at Boston Arena, secondly it was played in December, thirdly it was played in consecutive days—the 26th and 27th to be exact, fourthly it started on a Friday.

The Beanpot moved to Boston Garden in its 2nd Edition in 1954, this time in January, still on consecutive days but was a Monday-Tuesday event instead.

It would not become its traditional self until the 1958 edition, when fittingly, BU won its first Beanpot title after beating BC 5-4 on February 3rd, and Northeastern 9-3 in the final on February 10th.

In 1956-57 the Boston Arena quartet was broken up as the Arena’s first collegiate resident, Harvard, left for the newly built Donald C. Watson Rink in Allston. BU finished their time sharing the Arena with Harvard at 10-22-1 against the Crimson at their shared home. Most of those wins came between 1946-47 and 1951-52, when the Terriers won 7 of 9 games against them.

Two years later, the Eagles would fly the nest, turning the trio to duo, as BC headed out of Boston to McHugh Forum on their Chestnut Hill campus in 1958. The Battles of Comm Ave in the shared arena era were tight at 25-26-3, including a 10 game unbeaten streak that stretched from March 4th, 1926—a 3-0 Sydney Silberberg shutout—through February 16th, 1934 a 6-3 overtime win (at the time overtime did not end when a team scored).

For the next thirteen years, the Terriers and Huskies would be the sole residents of Boston Arena. This being the era of Jack Kelley behind the bench and Jack Parker on the ice. Kelley posted an astonishing 96-31-1 record in the Arena, including a 15-3-0 record vs. their black and red arena mates—the three losses coming in three consecutive games: December 30th, 1963 (2-6), January 8th, 1964 (2-3 (OT)), and December 28th, 1964 (3-4). Jack Parker scored his first goal at the Arena on November 30th, 1965 vs. Yale (7-0).

On March 9th, 1971, the Terriers played their final game as the home team at Boston Arena defeating RPI 11-0 in the ECAC Tournament, Dan Brady made 28 saves in what was also the last BU shutout as a home team at the Arena. The win capped off a 17 game winning streak at Boston Arena stretching from February 28th, 1970 through March 9th, 1971, their longest winning streak at the arena. From December 27th, 1968 through their final game in 1971, did not lose consecutive home games, recording a 35-4-0 record in that span.

BU ended their residency 306-158-11 at Boston Arena. The Terriers held a 41-13-0 record vs. NU, 34-10-2 vs. MIT, 34-29-3 vs. BC, and 17-29-2 vs. Harvard, their most played opponents at the arena. BU’s first game against 27 different opponents were played at Boston Arena, including western teams such as Michigan State (12/30/58), Denver (3/18/60), Notre Dame (12/29/70) and Bowling Green (1/16/71).

The Terriers left Boston Arena as reigning National Champions, claiming their first title in their final season at the Arena. Then moved into their shiny new Walter Brown Arena on November 27th, 1971 establishing a new era of BU Hockey and winning their second National Championship in their first season in their new arena.

Tournaments at the Arena — Part I

Starting in 1953, BU hosted the Boston Arena Christmas Tournament, a tournament that fluctuated from 4 teams in its first edition to 9 in 1955, by 1961 it shrunk back down to 4. After a few editions, NU would join as co-host of the event around the time that BU and NU were the sole residents of the Arena. The Terriers dominated the tournament, the only team to win more than twice, BU won 6, including the last 5. The 1966 featured the only joint-title with BU and Cornell, both undefeated in collegiate play, skated to a 3-3 tie after two overtimes.

Boston Arena was the original host of the ECAC tournament from 1962-1966, though the Terriers never won an ECAC tournament title at the Arena. However, BU only suffered two losses in 10 ECAC tournament games there: the 1965 Semifinal vs. Brown (2-5) as the #1 overall seed and the 1966 Semifinal vs. Cornell, in both instances they went on to win the 3rd place game.

On the national stage, Boston Arena hosted the 1960 Final Four in which BU finished 3rd, losing to eventual champions Denver (4-6) in the semifinal and beating St. Lawrence in the 3rd place game 7-6.

You Can Go Home Again

Boston University opened Walter Brown Arena on November 27th, 1971, ushering in a new era of BU Hockey. Their time at Boston Arena did not truly end, as they continued to make visits to St. Botolph Street for decades to come.

For the first time since the arena burned to the ground in 1918, the Terriers saw a season on the ice where they didn’t skate on Boston Arena ice—as they went without a visit to the Arena—in 1971-72. Their first game back to their former home came on January 23rd, 1973, a 3-2 win, Bill Burlington scored the game winning goal. BU went on to win their next 4 games at the Arena. The Scarlet and White finally saw their 22 game winning streak at Boston Arena end on January 10th, 1979 (4-6).

Northeastern won the next 4 and within that streak purchased the arena from the Metropolitan District Commission for $250,000 on October 3rd, 1979, and renamed the arena “Northeastern Arena” for a short time before giving it its current name Matthews Arena on November 14th, 1982 after George and Hope Matthews. George, university chairman emeritus and major benefactor of the arena.

Women’s Club Hockey at the Arena

During that time, the BU women’s club team secured their first Beanpot, winning it at Matthews Arena in 1981. The Terriers won both games 4-0, beating hosts Northeastern in the semifinal before knocking off rivals Boston College in the final. It would be the only Beanpot the Terriers won as a club team, facing off against the other school’s varsity teams for decades before they went full varsity in 2006.

Their Beanpot success as a club team was short lived, with BU only garnering consolation game wins in 1979 and 1986. The Terriers won just one non-Beanpot game at Matthews Arena as a club team, a 1-0 shutout of the Huskies.

Most games in the Matthews Arena Era saw the Terriers face the Northeastern Huskies. However, on one—surprisingly warm (50 degree)—December night, the ancient rivals played one more at their former shared home when the Boston University Terriers and Boston College Eagles faced off on December 9th, 1987 at the Arena. The impetus for the game was the construction of the new Silvio O. Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill on the site of McHugh Forum, resulting in the nomadic Eagles taking up residence at various area arenas. The game was a back and forth battle, with future Hobey Baker Award winner David Emma putting the Eagles in front in the first. The Terriers answered back in the 2nd with a goal from Ville Kentala in the first 38 seconds of the period. BC took the lead back when Steve Scheifele scored at 11:48. BU again tied things up with a David Tomlinson goal at 16:20 in the period. In the third the team again traded goals BC’s Scheifele at 2:11, BU’s Mike Sullivan at 11:43, Eagles’ Jeff O’Neil at 13:46, and finally Tom Ryan to send things to OT at 19:32. Both team’s goaltenders shined despite what the scoreline says BC’s David Littman recorded 37 saves and BU’s Tom Ryan recorded 35. The final Battle of Comm Ave at the Arena ended in a well fought 4-4 tie.

The first three decades saw each team go on winning streaks at the arena. BU’s aforementioned 5 game win streak from 1973 through 1978, followed by NU winning 4 in a row from 1979 through 1983, BU won 6 from 1984 through 1987, 4 straight from 1988 through 1989 for the Huskies, then 4 straight by the Terriers from 1990 to 1992. After trading wins for a few seasons in the mid 90s, the Terriers won 13 of 17 from the 1995-96 season through the 2005-06, holding a 13-2-2 record. The stretch included a 10 game unbeaten streak from February 23rd, 2001 to February 28th, 2007.

All seven of the ties between the teams at the Arena came between 2004 and 2021, including a match-up in 2009 that saw #1 ranked BU and #4 ranked NU in the only top 5 match-up between the teams in the Arena’s history.

From 2010 through 2015 BU won 7 of 8 at Matthews, their one loss a 4-5 overtime loss on March 3rd 2012.

The past decade has seen a very tight 4-3-3 series, with no team winning more than once in a row. That span has also seen one or both teams ranked in each matchup, with the last completely unranked game at Matthews between the teams was March 6th, 2010, a 4-3 win for the Terriers.

The women’s program, like their male counterparts, had their first varsity game also played at the Arena, a 3-4 loss on October 7th, 2005. Caroline Bourdeau scored the first goal in program history at the Arena. They held a 13-22-4 record at the Arena including Beanpot games. 33 of those games were against Northeastern, 5 against Harvard—who they beat just once on January 14th, 2025 in their last matchup against them at the Arena, and 1 against BC in the 2017 Beanpot semifinal (2-3).

Sarah Lefort leads all Terriers with 6 goals at the Arena, Victoria Bach leads in assists (6) and points (11). Lefort (12/03/2013) and Bach (01/16/2018) also have the only Terrier hat tricks at the arena. Allyse Wilcox recorded the only shutout for the Terriers at Matthews on February 21st, 2009.

The Terriers recorded their last win at Matthews Arena on February 4th, 2025 a 3-2 win, Alex Law recorded the OT winner. Their last game was November 1st, 2025 (3-7) Clara Yuhn scored the final goal at Matthews for the Scarlet and White.

Final Whistle

When the final whistle sounds at Matthews Arena, it will be the first time that BU’s three home arena will no longer be in active use. All but 1 Terrier head coach has taken a spot behind the bench at Boston (Matthews) Arena—Harold Stuart coached the Terriers a single season in 1919-20 when the arena was being reconstructed. Of the remaining coaches, only Edgar Burkhardt, the Terriers’ 1st head coach, failed to win a game at the Arena. Harry Cleverly leads all BU coaches with 126 wins in the arena.

The closing of Matthews Arena also ends the opportunity for a Terrier to record a historic home hat trick by scoring at all three BU home arenas: Boston Arena, Walter Brown Arena, Agganis Arena. An achievement that only 3 Terriers have ever accomplished Kenny Roche and David Van der Gulik in 2004-05—the season that Agganis Arena opened—and Domenick Fensore who did it in 2022-23 when BU played a one-off game against Harvard at Walter Brown Arena.

So much BU Hockey history took place through the famous arch in a place at one point known simply as “the Arena”. From Harry Cleverly and Jack Garrity, to Jack Kelley and Bob Marquis, to Jack Parker and Chris Drury, to Jay Pandolfo and Lane Hutson, all took a front row seat in the pews of one of hockey’s great cathedrals. A grand hall of hockey closes its door, leaving only the memories of the names, the moments, the triumphs, that once rang through its vaulted rafters.

Boston Arena

The Jack Parker Terrier hockey story at Boston Arena began with an 11 goal season on the BU freshman team in 1964-65. Parker—who wore #15 for the season—scored his first goal with the varsity team, at the Arena, in a 7-0 rout of Yale on November 30th, 1965, the 7th goal in that game.

Parker’s first season in Scarlet and White featured a trip to Olympia Stadium in Detroit when the Terriers received an invitation to the inaugural Great Lakes Invitational in 1965—Parker would return to the GLI three times as a coach, finishing 3rd in 1975 and 1978, before claiming the title in 2002. BU lost the opening game to defending National Champion Michigan Tech (2-4), before a rout of Colorado College (10-3) to finish 3rd in the tournament. The Terriers faced off again with the defending champions just over a week later, in the Boston Arena Christmas Tournament where again BU fell to MTU (2-5), to finish 2nd in the tournament. Through the first half of the year, MTU was the only team to score 4+ against BU and gave the Terriers 2 of their 3 losses. The Terriers finished Parker’s sophomore season 27-8-0, 2nd in the ECAC regular season, 3rd in the ECAC tournament, and 4th in the NCAA Tournament after earning their 5th Final Four—it was not called the Frozen Four till 1999—as an at-large bid. Parker ended the season with 9 goals and 13 assists.

Parker vs. the Eagles—Part I

In his first game against Boston College (9-2 W), Parker recorded an assist on a 3rd period goal. The game also featured future coaching rival Jerry York, who scored for the Eagles. The Parker-York rivalry began in their high school days when they attended rival high schools: Parker (Catholic Memorial), York (Boston College High School). The rivalry continued in their collegiate playing days, and would be rekindled in the 2000s and 2010s when York returned to the Heights to coach the Eagles. As a player, Parker and the Terriers were a perfect 7-0-0 against BC. Parker recorded 2 goals and 3 assists in 7 games against BC. He recorded an assist in every BU-BC game at Boston Arena. Parker recorded his only multipoint game against BC at McHugh Forum in Chestnut Hill.

The 1966-67 season was more of the same for Parker and the Terriers. BU entered January with just 1 loss, winning 11 of their 13 games in the first half. Their only loss came to the Eastern Olympic Hockey Club, a non-collegiate team, in overtime. The Terriers won two trophies before the ball dropped. Winning the 1966 ECAC Holiday Hockey Festival at Madison Square Garden—not to be confused with the ECAC Christmas Hockey Tournament at Boston Garden, which did not feature the Terriers—with a goal from Herb Wakabayashi. Wakabayashi (16-51—67) along with linemates Serge Boily (29-26-55) and Mickey Gray (24-24—48) set the program record at the time (now 2nd overall), for the most points by a line in program history that season. In the completely unrelated to the previously mentioned two tournaments, the Boston Arena Christmas Tournament, the Terriers shared the title battling to a 3-3 tie after 2 overtimes with Cornell, also undefeated in NCAA play at the time. The game featured Ken Dryden in goal for the Big Red, who would be a thorn in the side of the Terriers, winning each of the next 7 games against the Terriers—though never able to shut them out. The 2nd half opened with Jack Parker’s first multi-goal game as a Terrier in an 11-1 win over Clarkson. Unfortunately for the Terriers the next time out, in their first ever trip to Denver to face the Pioneers, BU was swept (1-7, 1-3), their first collegiate losses of the season. Fortunately for the Terriers they won 12 of their next 14 to close out the season, unfortunately for the Terriers their two losses came to Cornell in the ECAC title game and the National Championship game. BU ended the season 25-5-1 and claimed their 2nd ECAC regular season title, Parker finishing the season with 8 goals and 9 assists.

As a senior, Jack Parker got his first taste of Scarlet and White leadership after being named Captain of the 1967–68 Terriers. Redeeming themselves from their 3rd place finish two seasons earlier, BU took the New Brunswick Invitational in Canada, defeating Memorial University (8-2) and New Brunskwick (13-3) to open the season. In another bout of redemption from the season earlier, defeating the Eastern Olympic Hockey Club 3-1. The Terriers entered the new year with just 1 loss in their 10 game first half—the single loss coming to Harvard at Watson Rink (5-8)—and another Boston Arena Christmas Tournament title. After tying Cornell for the 1966 title, BU won the next 4, claiming 5 straight titles (6th overall after having won the 1957 title). No other team won more than 2 in the 17 years of the BU hosted—and co-hosted by Northeastern after 1956—tournament. Early January 1968 saw Jack Parker’s one and only hat trick in a 10-3 win over Loyola of Montreal on January 9th, 1968. However, the 2nd half of the season was not as successful as the 1st, with the Terriers going 11-8-3, all but one collegiate loss coming to teams from New York and New Jersey. In Parker’s last game at Boston Arena as a player, he recorded his last goal (and last point) as a Terrier in a multi-goal performance vs. Providence (14-1) on March 2nd, 1968. In his final season as a player, Jack Parker and the Terriers, ended the season 20-9-3, 5th in the ECAC and 4th in the ECAC Tournament. Parker finished the season with 14 goals and 11 assists.

Jack Parker finished his playing career with 31 goals, 33 assists for 64 points. At Boston Arena, Parker recorded 16 goals and 16 assists, and the Terriers posted a 36-8-1 record at the Arena during his time.

BU faced 29 different opponents during this team and were undefeated against 14 of them, led by NU (9-0-0), BC (7-0-0), and Providence (6-0-0).

Upon graduation, Jack Parker headed to Medford High School for one season before returning to BU as an assistant coach under Jack Kelley.

Boston Garden (Part I)

Jack Parker’s success at the Boston Garden began during his playing days. The Terriers were 8-3-0 at the Garden, including 6 straight from 1965 through the 1967 ECAC Tournament semifinal. BU claimed a Beanpot title in all 3 seasons that Parker played for the Terriers, going 6-0 and outscoring opponents 38-14. Parker recorded 2 goals and 5 assists at the Garden, including the 4th BU goal in the 4-1 win over Harvard in the 1968 Beanpot Title game, in which he was the captain. The only teams to beat BU at the Garden during this time were Cornell (2) and Clarkson (1).

Walter Brown Arena

The Defending National Champion Terriers new on-campus home rink, Walter Brown Arena, opened on November 27th, 1971 against Yale (6-3 W), coincidentally the first team that Jack Parker played at Boston Arena as a player. Behind the bench as an assistant for the Terriers first two National Championships—still the only Eastern team with back-to-back titles—Parker got a chance to move up to coach the B-team in the 1972-73 season under new head coach Leon Abbott. Jack Kelley left BU after winning the 1972 title to coach the New England Whalers of the WHA.

Jack Parker’s life and BU Hockey history was forever changed on December 21st, 1973. Leon Abbott was abruptly fired, due to recruitment violations that were eventually cleared, but the damage was done1. Parker took over head coaching duties for the Terriers and would not give up the reins for forty years.

“The House That Jack Kelley Built” was soon to become “The House That Jack Parker Rocked”. The Terriers of the 70s under Parker continued their dominance of Eastern hockey that started under Kelley. Under Parker, the Scarlet and White won 4 straight ECAC tournament titles from 1974-1977, in that span finishing 3rd in the NCAA Tournament in 3 of 4 trips—Ironically the only time they lost in the NCAA consolation game was the year they won the ECAC regular season title in that span 1975-76.

After 4 straight trips to the Final Four with not much to show for it, the 1977–78 Terriers were something different. Jack Parker’s Wiseguys2, as they were called, recorded one of the greatest seasons in program history. The team posted a 30-2-0 record—at .938 they hold the program record for highest winning percentage—with their only two losses coming to Yale on February 18th and Providence on March 10th in the ECAC tournament semifinal. The season also saw Jack Parker record his 100th win behind the bench in just 129 games—the fastest in program history. The team featured three of BU Four—the four Terriers who would help lead Team USA to their 1980 Olympic Gold Medal—Jack O’Callahan, Jim Craig, and David Silk. The team also featured Mark Fidler whose 35 assists would be a Freshman program record, till Jack Eichel recorded 45 in 2014-15 and whose 65 points would be the most by a Freshman until Eichel’s 71. The team also featured Dick Lamby, one of the greatest offensive defensemen in program history, and Tony Meagher, a member of the most dominant families in Terrier history not matched until the Hutsons four decades later. The 1977-78 team gave the Terriers their first national title under Parker and 3rd overall. The title was even sweeter, coming against arch-rival Boston College.

In the early 80s Jack Parker’s time in the ECAC would come to an end with a 162-70-6 record, 4 tournament titles, 2 Regular Season titles, and a Regional Title. Under Parker two Terriers won ECAC Player of the Year: Peter Brown (1975-76) and Cleon Daskalakis (1983-84) and three won ECAC Rookie of the Year: Mark Fidler (1977-78), Bill Whelton (1978-79) and John Cullen (1983-84). The Terriers held the record for most ECAC Rookie of the Year winners till 2007-08—despite not being in the conference for nearly 40 years. On March 1st, 1983, Jack Parker secured his 200th win, defeating Boston College 3-0. 17 games later, Parker became the all-wins leader, recording his 212th win, against Northern Arizona (6-5) at Walter Brown Arena.

Parker vs. the Eagles — Part II

As a coach, Jack Parker faced Boston College 155 times—the most of any team— holding a 78-65-12 record against them. The Eagles were the only team to record more than 47 wins against Parker’s Terriers. In the Beanpot, Parker bested the Eagles 20 times, losing only 8, including a 10-5 record in title games. In fact, Jack Parker won as many Beanpot titles against BC as BC won overall in the era. The Terriers never lost a Hockey East title game to BC in the Parker Era, winning the 1986 title and 2006 title game showdowns. In his coaching rivalry with Jerry York, Parker came out on top finishing 38-37-7, in their bouts. Indoors and outdoors, Parker bested BC, winning at Fenway Park 3-2 in 2010. However, the greatest triumph over the Eagles under Parker was the 1978 National Championship Game, the only time the ancient rivals faced off on college hockey’s greatest stage.

In 1984, BU, BC, Providence, Northeastern, and UNH came together to shake up Eastern hockey, splitting from the ECAC to form the Hockey East Association. New conference, same Terriers, as the team finished 2nd in the regular season standings their first two seasons before claiming their first Hockey East tournament title in 1986 defeating tournament #1 seed Boston College. On January 13th, 1988, Parker earned his 300th win, beating Wisconsin 10-6.

The Terriers’ interregnum of the 80s gave way to the 90s, where Jack Parker’s legendary status was solidified. After just 2 NCAA tournament appearances in the 80s, the Scarlet and White took a trip to the National Stage eight straight years from 1990-1998. A span that saw 7 Final Four appearances, including 5 straight from 1993-1994 and 4 Title game appearances. The decade saw Parker’s 400th (10/31/92), 500th (11/21/95), and 600th (11/27/99) wins behind the bench.

The 1994-95 was a fierce fight with the Maine Black Bears for the entire season. In four regular season games across 3 states—Maine, Massachusetts, and California—the Terriers could only pull out two ties compared to Maine’s two wins. The Scarlet and White featured numerous future NHL Stars that season including: Chris Drury (the Terriers’ first Hobey Baker Award winner), Jay Pandolfo (future Terrier Head Coach), Mike Grier, and Shawn Bates. The season also saw the return of eternal rival, Jerry York, who returned to coach Boston College. Despite failing to win the Great Western Freezeout at the LA Forum, the Terriers redeemed themselves with wins in the Mariucci Classic, Beanpot, and Hockey East Tournament. BU ultimately got their revenge on the Black Bears, beating them in the National Championship to claim the 4th Title and 2nd under Jack Parker.

The following two seasons saw BU make the Final Four twice more, including a National Title game appearance in 1997, falling to North Dakota (6-4), Jack Parker’s last loss in a National Championship game.

The early 2000s saw another dip in performance as their 30+ year old arena began to show its age—although Parker reached his 700th win on December 3rd 2004 vs. Boston College at Walter Brown Arena (3-2 W). However, a new era would dawn just down the road in “The House that Jack Built”.

Boston Garden (Part II)

If there’s one place, Jack Parker did his best work away from home, it was the Boston Garden. In 71 games coaching the Terriers there, he recorded 49 wins and just 22 losses, the .690 winning percentage, his best at any arena where he coached 40+ games. The Boston Garden was the home of the Jack Parker Invitational Beanpot for much of Jack Parker’s tenure. Parker’s Terriers lifted the trophy 10 times at the Garden compared to Harvard’s 5, Northeastern’s 4, and BC’s 3 during his tenure. Parker won 31 of 44 Beanpot games at Boston Garden. Parker held a whopping 17-5 conference tournament record at the Garden—ECAC (10-4-0), Hockey East (7-1)—winning 4 ECAC Tournament titles and 3 Hockey East Tournament Titles there. To top it all off Parker and the Terriers won their last 7 games at the Garden including the last two Hockey East tournaments there and the final Beanpot.

Agganis Arena

On January 2nd, 2005, a packed Walter Brown Arena saw the Terriers face the #1 Minnesota Golden Gophers, Brad Zancanaro scored BU’s only goal, the final goal of the game (1-2 L). The following night, in the brand new Agganis Arena, Brad Zancanaro opened the arena with a goal en route to a 2-1 win over the top team in the country and ushering in the latest chapter of Terrier hockey in what would become Jack Parker Rink at Agganis Arena. The arena was painstakingly designed by the coach, who wanted to give BU a top-notch home for many years to come.

The new arena made the Terriers more competitive in the modern college hockey world, with BU completing the “conference double”—winning the Hockey East Regular Season and Hockey East Tournament title—in the 2005-06 season, their first since the 1996-97 season.

Four years after the opening of Agganis Arena, the Terriers would reach the mountain top one last time under Jack Parker, showing the 64-year-old could still do it. The 2008-09 Terriers were a wrecking ball, they amassed the most wins in program history (35) while playing the most games in program history (45). The “Burn the Boats”3 team won every trophy in front of them 7 for 7 in trophies: from the Ice Breaker Invitational to open the season, the Denver Cup to open January, the Beanpot in February, the Hockey East Regular Season and Tournament, the Northeast Regional Championship, the National Championship. Additionally, the Captain, Matt Gilroy won the Hobey Baker Award—the 2nd under Jack Parker. The team featured 10 future NHLers the most since 1990-91, which also featured 10. The 2008-09 Terriers always found a way to win even when hope seemed lost, most notably in the National Championship game coming back from being down 3-1 with less than a minute to play to an overtime win.

TD Garden

The FleetCenter (now: TD Garden) opened much like the Boston Garden closed, with a BU Beanpot win in 1996. Followed by 4 more Terrier Beanpot titles. It wasn’t until the turn of the millennium that some other than Jack Parker’s Terriers lifted the Beanpot at the new arena. In all, Jack Parker’s team lifted 11 Beanpots at the arena with all other teams combining for 7 (BC - 7, NU - 0, Harvard - 0). Parker held a 36-20-0 record at TD Garden which included 3 Hockey East titles (1997, 2006, 2009).

On March 23rd, 2013 the Jack Parker Era at Boston University came to an end with a loss to UMass-Lowell in the Hockey East title game. Parker’s last win, fittingly, came the night early over Jerry York’s Boston College Eagles (6-3).

Parker ended his BU career with an 897-472-115 record. The wins are the most at one school in NCAA hockey history. He has a winning record as a head coach against every opponent he faced 22 or more times (15 teams). Parker as a player, assistant coach, and head coach was a part of 62.5% of BU wins all-time (as of the end of the 2024-25 season) and 59.5% of BU games. He is the leader in Beanpot Titles (21), NCAA Tournament Appearances (24), and Frozen Four appearances (13). BU’s record books, history books, and trophy cases are filled with people and moments that Parker played under, played with, and coached.

The three time Spencer Penrose (National Coach of the Year) Winner—1975, 1978, 2009—and five-time Hockey East Coach of the Year will add a new honor to his long list of awards alongside his 2014 Hobey Baker Legend of College Hockey Award and 2010 Lester Patrick Trophy. 31 years after becoming a BU Athletics Hall of Famer, 30 years after being among the inaugural class of Beanpot Hall of Famers, and eight years after being inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, the long and winding road through the great cathedrals of college hockey will take Jack Parker to the greatest cathedral in all of hockey, the Hockey Hall of Fame. There is no better person to be the first Terrier immortalized in Toronto. The greatest leader in BU Hockey history will once again lead the Scarlet and White to glory. Jack Parker is forever and always a Hockey Hall of Famer.

Firsts

The first goal scored by a Terrier was scored by Warren Pond vs. BC on February 6th, 1918 at Boston Arena. The last at the Arena—before BU moved to Walter Brown Arena—was scored by freshman forward Ray Cournoyea. Cournoyea actually scored BU’s last two goals as a resident of the Arena in an 11-0 thumping of RPI in the ECAC tournament en route to their first National Championship. Senior Ron Anderson scored the first goal at Walter Brown Arena vs. Yale just 7:51 in the first after going down 2 to the Elis. The goal sparked a comeback and the Terriers won their arena opener 6-3.

The first goalie point was recorded by Ed Walsh at Walter Brown Arena vs. Merrimack on February 28th, 1974 in a 9-2 rout of the Warriors. The first goalie point in a Beanpot for the Terriers was recorded by Jason Tapp in the 2001 Beanpot final.

The first BU goal at the current iteration of Madison Square Garden was a product of the 3 skaters of the BU Four. Mike Eruzione lit the lamp with assists from Dave Silk and Jack O’Callahan on January 2nd, 1977 vs. Colgate in the ECAC Holiday Hockey Festival.

The Terriers’ first win also featured the first Hat Trick in program history when Joseph Almer put 3 in the back of the net of Aggies of the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass-Amherst). Future Minutemen head coach Don “Toot” Cahoon recorded the last hat trick as a resident of Boston Arena in their farewell game vs. RPI in 1971 and recorded the first hat trick at Walter Brown Arena vs. Merrimack on January 4th, 1972.

In the Beanpot the first BU hat trick was recorded by junior forward Jack Murphy against BC in the 1955 semifinal and the most recent recorded by sophomore forward Brian Collins in the 2001 semifinal vs. Northeastern. Cole Hutson’s 4 point game in the 2025 semifinal vs. Harvard was the most by a Terrier in a Beanpot game since Brian Collins’ 4 point (3g-1a) effort in the aforementioned 2001 semifinal.

Joe Beauchemin recorded the first Terrier shutout on February 24th, 1923 vs. Bates on the road (6-0). While Don Martin, recorded the first BU shutout at Boston Arena and first against the Eagles on December 23rd, 1924 (1-0). Dan Brady earned the first shutout at Walter Brown Arena on January 29th, 1972 (5-0) against St. Louis University.

Records

Now that we’ve looked at some first (and lasts) let’s take a look at some records. Starting off with goalies, Jack Ferreira set the program record for most shutouts in a season with 8 in 1964-65, John Curry nearly matched him in 2006-07 when he recorded 7. Jack Oettinger is the only other Terrier goalie to record 5+ in a season. Oettinger is also the only goalie in program history to record 4+ shutouts in multiple seasons, doing so all 3 seasons between the pipes.

Jack Garrity holds the program record for most hat tricks with 9 in his record setting 1949-50 season, with 5 of those games being 4+ goal games.

Based on the data we have available, Garrity also has the most career hat tricks in program history, with 14. Chris Drury and Bob Marquis are next up, with each having (at least) 9.1

Forwards

Jack Eichel (2014-15) — 21 votes

In his sole season as a Terrier in the 2014-15 season, Eichel set the program record for points by a Freshman with 71, after scoring 26 goals and recording 45 assists. A Member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, All-Hockey East First-Team, and a 1st Team All-American, he became the first Terrier to lead the nation in scoring since Herb Wakabayashi in 1966-67. The third Terrier to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, Eichel became just the 2^nd freshman to earn the honor. Jack Eichel also won the USA Hockey College Player of the Year and the Tim Taylor (NCAA Rookie of the Year) Award—at the time just the 2nd Terrier to do so. Along with winning a Beanpot, Eichel also won the Hockey East Tournament, earning the William Flynn Tournament MVP award in the process. He was also the 3rd player to be named Hockey East Rookie and Player of the Year in the same season.

Macklin Celebrini (2023-24) — 20 votes

The only Canadian on the Quarter Century Team, Macklin Celebrini is the first freshman Terrier since Mark Fidler in 1977-78 to score 30 goals in a season. Celebrini earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team, All-Hockey East First-Team honors and was named a 1st Team All-American. The 2023-24 Hockey East Player and Rookie of the Year, became the youngest player ever to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

Nick Bonino (2007-10) — 16 votes

A member of the 100 Point Club, Nick Bonino spent 3 seasons in the Scarlet and White recording 45 goals and 72 assists, totaling 117 points. The 2009 Beanpot MVP scored the game tying goal with 15.4 seconds left in the 3^rd period of the 2009 National Championship game en route to the Terriers 5^th National Championship Title.

Defensemen

Lane Hutson (2022-24) — 21 votes

The two time First-Team All-American, smashed the program record for points by a freshman defenseman with 48 points in the 2022-23. In the same season, Hutson became the first ever defenseman to claim the Hockey East Scoring Crown. The first Terrier since 2009 to win the Walter Brown Award, scored the game winning overtime goal to give BU their 10^th Hockey East Tournament Title, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. In two seasons in Scarlet and White, Hutson scored 30 goals and recorded 67 assists for 97 total points.

Matt Gilroy (2005-09) — 20 votes

The 3-time Beanpot Champion and Captain of the 2009 National Champion Terriers, Matt Gilroy, became the 2^nd Terrier to win the Hobey Baker Award in 2009. The 2009 Walter Brown Award winner, scored 25 goals and recorded 67 assists, totaling 92 points in Scarlet and White. After joining the team as a walk-on, Gilroy went on to be a 3 time All-American, two of which were First-Team selections. He was also a member of the All Hockey-East 1st all four years as a Terrier.

Goalie

John Curry (2003-07) — 14 votes

In goal, John Curry, who set the program record for career goals against average with 2.07 and career save percentage with a .923. The 2007 Walter Brown Award winner—the first Terrier goalie to do so since Cleon Daskalakis in 1984—and Hockey East Player of the Year, backstopped the Terriers to 3 straight Beanpot titles, going 5-0 in the tournament, including allowing just 1 goal on 64 shots faced in the 2007 tournament to earn MVP and Eberly Award honors. Curry possessed a 59-29-15 record with 13 shutouts.

Coach

Jack Parker (1972-2013) — 15 votes

Though he retired in 2013, Parker led the Terriers to 280 wins in the Quarter Century, including a national championship in 2009, 2 Hockey East Tournament Titles, 3 Hockey East Regular Season titles, and 6 Beanpot titles. He was twice named Hockey East Coach of the Year and earned the Spencer Penrose Award in 2009.

Colin Wilson (2007-09) — 13 votes

A Hobey Baker Finalist in 2009, Colin Wilson was named the USA Hockey College Player of the Year the same season. With 29 goals and 61 assists for 90 career points as a Terrier, Wilson was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year in the 2007-08 season and was the Hockey East Scoring Champion in 2008-09. Wilson became the first Terrier since Chris Drury in 1997-98 to record 50 points in a season during the 2008-09 season. He earned First-Team All-American honors en route to the 2009 National Championship.

Danny O'Regan (2012-16) — 12 votes

The leader in goals and points in the quarter-century with 66 and 154, respectively, Danny O’Regan led the Terriers in scoring his freshman (2012-13) and senior years (2015-16). He earned Second-Team All-American honors as a senior in 2015-16. O’Regan was one of 7 players since 1998 to record 50+ points in a season, doing so in the 2014-15 season.

Evan Rodrigues (2011-15) — 9 votes

Second only to his line mate, Jack Eichel, with 61 pts, Evan Rodrigues finished 2nd nationally in points in 2014-15 to cap off his BU career as a senior—one of only 3 Terriers since 1996-97 to record 60 points in a season. He was a member of the 2nd Team All-Hockey East in two seasons as a Terrier in 2012-13 and 2014-15. Rodrigues finished his time in Scarlet and White with 42 goals and 79 assists, for 121 points, with over half of his points coming as a senior. He also tied the program record with 6 assists vs. UMass-Amherst on January 30th, 2015—the most in a game since Ron Anderson vs. Merrimack on January 4th, 1972.

Pete MacArthur (2004-08) — 9 votes

A Second-Team All-American as a senior, Pete MacArthur is one of two players on the Quarter Century Teams to play at Walter Brown Arena and is the only one to score at both Walter Brown and Agganis Arena. His 64 goals and 154 points are second among Terriers in the quarter-century, only behind O’Regan. MacArthur who captained the 2007–08 Terriers was the team’s scoring champion in 3 of his 4 seasons in Scarlet and White and was named to a Hockey East All-Star Team in all four years at BU—All Rookie-Team in 2004-05, 2nd Team All-Hockey East in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and 1st Team All-Hockey East in 2007-08.

Defensemen

Matt Grzelcyk (2012-16) — 17 votes

Beanpot Hall of Famer and 2015 Beanpot MVP, Matt Grzelcyk, scored the game winning goal in the 2015 Beanpot Championship game to give the Terriers’ their first title since 2009. The two time captain—2014-15 and 2015-16—Grzelcyk twice earned First-Team All-American honors in the same seasons. In his 125 games in Scarlet and White, he scored 26 goals and 69 assists, totalling 95 points.

Kevin Shattenkirk (2007-10) — 9 votes

Captain of the 2009–10 Terriers, Kevin Shattenkirk, scored 18 goals and recorded 60 assists for 78 points in his 3 seasons at BU. Shattenkirk recorded the primary assist on the National Championship winning goal in 2009. A Second-Team All-American in 2008-09, he was 3rd on the team in goals (7), assists (21), and points (28) among defensemen.

Goalie

Jake Oettinger (2016-19) — 13 votes

Oettinger nearly matched First-Team Goalie John Curry, statistically nearly exactly. He possessed a 58-40-11 record, including 13 shutouts. He matched Curry’s program record .923 SV% and recorded a 2.34 GAA—3rd best in program history. The 2008 Hockey East Tournament MVP, recorded the 3rd most career saves with 3054, 1 behind Sean Fields for 2nd with Kieran Millan holding the record with 3768. In 2018-19, Oettinger recorded the most saves in Scarlet and White by a goalie not named Kieran Millan—who recorded 1110 in 2011-12 and 1085 in 2010-11—with 1076.

Coach

Jay Pandolfo (2022-Pres.) — 6 votes

A national champion as a player, Jay Pandolfo returned to Comm Ave in 2021-22 as an associate head coach before being elevated to head coach the following season. Under Pandolfo, the Terriers accumulated an 81-35-4 record. After reaching 4 straight Frozen Fours as a player, Coach Pandolfo led the Terriers to the Frozen Four in each of his 3 seasons behind the bench. The 2023 Hockey East Coach of the Year, led the Terriers to a Hockey East Regular Season Title and Hockey East Tournament title in his first season. In the 2024-25 season, the Terriers claimed their first Beanpot title in the Pandolfo Era, becoming the 7th straight Terrier head coach to do so.

Origins

Seventeen pairs of siblings (soon to be nineteen in 2024-25) have shared the ice together in BU Hockey history, starting all the way back in 1924-25 with Julian Kontoff and Morey Kontoff. In their first game together, the Kontoffs both scored, a 3-3 tie vs. MIT, becoming the first pair of Terrier brothers to do so in the same game.

It wasn’t until the 1951-52 season that the program witnessed its next fraternal connection. Future legendary Terrier Head Coach Jack Kelley’s younger Paul joined the team as a goaltender, becoming the first (and so far only) Skater-Goalie siblings in program history. In 1957-58, Prince Edward Island’s Dave and Don MacLeod helped the Scarlet and White lift the Beanpot Trophy for the first time in their history in 1958, and by extension, they are the first pair of brothers to do so. In the 9-3 drubbing of the Northeastern Huskies, each brother scored two, with Dave doing so in the first and second periods and Don scoring both of his in the third.

The O’Connell brothers, Mike and Dennis, joined the Scarlet and White in the 1963-64 season. The duo combined for 16 points in their single season together and Mike’s only season in Scarlet. Dennis was in the top four in scoring all three of his seasons at BU, ending his career with 94 points.

Marvelous Meagher Brothers

For seven years, from 1973 to 1980, the Meagher Brothers thrilled Terrier fans. Terry and Rick (1973-76), followed by Rick and Tony (1976-77), scored more than any sets of brothers before them or since them, combining for 369 during their brotherly era. Terry and Rick became the first pair of Terrier brothers to play in what is now known as the Frozen Four; doing so in all three years together, Rick and Tony followed with another appearance in their one season together. In 1978, Tony Meagher would do alone what he and his brothers were never able to do together—bring a National Championship back to Commonwealth Avenue.

The Meagher brothers recorded four of the top six and the top three best seasons in school history by a pair of siblings

Lappin-Sacco

Ten years after the Meaghers, the BU brothers legacy continued with Scott and Steve Shaunessy, marking the beginning of seven straight sibling seasons on Comm Ave (1986-1993). Notably, Scott’s daughter, Julia, later played alongside BU Hockey’s first pair of sisters, Luisa and Lilli Welcke.

In the 1988-89 season, BU featured multiple pairs of brothers for the first time: Chris and Mike Lappin, and David and Joe Sacco. The Saccos are the only set of siblings besides the Meaghers to score over 33 goals in a season, achieving this in 1988-89. The Lappins and Saccos became brothers-in-law when David married the Lappins' sister, Elizabeth.1

Twinning

Mike and Mark Bavis arrived in the 1989-90 season as the first pair of twins to share the ice for the Terriers. They played together for four years, combining for 66 goals and 162 points. Their 145 penalty minutes in the 1992-93 season remain the most by a pair of brothers in a single season in program history.

The women’s program finally got their own pair of siblings when Luisa and Lilli Welcke transferred to the Terriers from the Maine Black Bears, becoming the first pair of BU siblings to do so. The German sisters are also the first non-North American siblings to play together at BU.

Champions Together

On April 11, 2009, in Washington, D.C., the Boston University Terriers captured their fifth national championship in program history. With that win, Matt and Kevin Gilroy, along with Vinny and Victor Saponari, became the first pairs of siblings to win a national championship together in Scarlet and White. The Gilroys also set a record for the lowest penalty minutes by a pair of siblings in a season, accumulating only 14 between them.

Band of Brothers

The sons of legendary forward Tony Amonte, Ty and Tristan, began the new era of Terrier siblings in the 2021-22 season, becoming the first duo whose father also played at BU.

The 2022-23 season brought Terrier Nation sibling scoring not seen on Comm Ave since the late ‘70s. The Modern Meaghers, Lane and Quinn Hutson are the only siblings in school history to record over 56 points in multiple seasons together since Rick and Terry in 74-75 and 74-76. They are also the only siblings (not named Meagher) to record over 83 points in a season (85, 2023-24) and over 50 assists in a season (52, 2023-24). Like the Meagher, there are two pairs of Hutson brothers that have played (or will play) together on Comm Ave, with Lane and Quinn together in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and Cole joining Quinn in the upcoming 2024-25 (Lane signed with the Montreal Canadiens in the off-season).

The 2023-24 season featured the most siblings playing for BU Hockey simultaneously in school history (four pairs): Case and Gavin McCarthy, Aiden and Macklin Celebrini, Quinn and Lane Hutson, and Luisa and Lilli Welcke. Of the 163 goals scored by the men's team that season, 71 were scored by the six brothers, accounting for 43.6% of BU’s goals. Aiden Celebrini scored his only goal of the season on a night when his brother Macklin recorded a multi-goal game (10/21 at Notre Dame). The Hutsons both scored in three games that season, including back-to-back nights against UMass Lowell on November 10th and 11th. Quinn's goals on the 11th were part of a hat trick, a feat that Lane had accomplished the week before, making them the first pair of brothers to score hat tricks in back-to-back home games at Agganis Arena. The season also saw the most brothers to compete in the same Frozen Four in program history.

The Modern Terrier Siblings Era will continue for a fourth consecutive season, with two new siblings joining the Terriers: Kiera Healey and Cole Hutson. For the first time in program history, BU Women’s Hockey will have two pairs of siblings simultaneously: Luisa and Lilli Welcke, and Sydney and Kiera Healey. Additionally, this marks the first time that the women’s team has had more siblings than the men’s team in a season. Cole Hutson joins his brother Quinn, the high-scoring defenseman who surpassed their other brother, Lane's scoring totals with the USNTDP while setting the single-season and career points records for the program. Cole will look to break the freshman scoring records that Lane set in the 2022-23 season.

Other Notes

• Tommy and Mary Grace Kelley are the only brother-sister duo in school history to play on their respective BU Ice Hockey teams at the same time, doing so from 2015-17.

• Five Brothers captained the Terriers in a season where they played with their brother:
